FIRST RESPONDER

Because of the distance EmergyStat ambulances must travel to respond to E-911 emergency medical calls, St. George

Island Volunteer Fire Department's First Responder program was created in 19??, and have ## personnel to

assist ambulance and medical personnel at incidents in trauma care of patients, this may be spinal care, treatment of

burns, cuts and broken bones, oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R.) and defibrillation and medical

emergencies.  Their responsibilities is to provide casualty care after a serious emergency until the arrival of an ambulance.

Once the ambulance takes responsibility for the patient at the scene, the role of the First Responder becomes a support

role to the BLS/ALS level of care, which the ambulance can provide.
